Fabric Buying Guide: Material, Width & Yardage
Choose Ankara prints, Kente-style fabrics and embellished textiles with your project in mind. Before ordering, compare the material, width, piece length and care information on the individual product page.
1. Start with your project and pattern
For a garment, use the fabric recommendations and yardage chart on your sewing pattern. The amount you need depends on the garment size, fabric width and whether the print needs matching. For head wraps, bags or home projects, measure the finished pieces and allow for seams and hems.
2. Compare the stated material
A print's appearance does not establish its fiber content. Read the listing's material details when comparing cotton Ankara fabrics and polyester prints. If the composition is unclear, ask us before ordering.
Kente-style fabrics feature patterns inspired by Kente design. A Kente-style pattern alone does not mean a fabric is handwoven; rely on the specific construction and material described in its listing.
3. Check width, length and set contents
Fabric width and piece size vary by listing. One yard equals 36 inches (91.44 cm). Compare both width and length with your pattern requirements; a longer, narrower piece may not substitute for a wider piece.
Check whether the listed quantity is one continuous piece or a set of separate pieces. Do not assume every product is a six-yard cut. If the listing does not answer your question, contact us before purchasing.
4. Plan for the print and finish
Look through the available photos for motif size, direction, borders and details such as stones or metallic embellishment. Allow extra fabric when your project requires matching a large or directional print. Screen settings can affect how colors appear.
Browse Ankara fabrics, embellished styles or new arrivals, then check the details of the exact item you select.
5. Check care before washing or cutting
Use the care directions supplied for the particular fabric. Do not assume a care method suitable for plain cotton is suitable for every coating, stone or embellished finish. Inspect the fabric when it arrives and read our return policy before cutting, washing or sewing it, as these actions affect return eligibility.
