How to Wash and Care for Ankara Fabric (Including Stoned and Sequin Wax)
Share
Good care keeps Ankara bright for years. Plain cotton wax is easy; embellished fabrics need a gentler touch. Always check the care notes on your specific listing first.
Plain real wax Ankara (100% cotton)
- Wash in cold water, inside out, with a mild detergent. No bleach.
- Wash dark and bright prints separately the first few times.
- Line dry in the shade. Direct sun fades colors over time.
- Iron on the reverse side, on a cotton setting.
Should you pre-wash before sewing?
Real wax cotton can shrink slightly, so many sewists rinse and dry the fabric before cutting. Only do this once you're sure you're keeping it, because washed fabric can't be returned under our return policy.
Stoned, sequin and glitter fabrics
- Hand wash gently in cold water, or dry clean.
- Never wring, twist or tumble dry. Press water out with a towel.
- Iron from the back with a pressing cloth, never directly on stones, sequins or foil.
- Store folded with tissue between layers, or hung, so stones don't snag.
Lace
Dry clean, or hand wash very gently in cold water and dry flat. Avoid hanging wet lace, which can stretch.
Polyester Ankara prints
Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle and hang to dry. Use a low iron setting.
